What this site collects

Visitor statistics

I count page views so I know which writing is worth doing more of. This is measured on my own server — there is no Google Analytics, no Facebook pixel, and no third-party script of any kind.

For each page view I store the page visited, the referring site, a rough device type (desktop, mobile, or tablet), and the time.

Your IP address is never stored. It is combined with your browser's user-agent and a secret value, hashed, and only the hash is kept — so repeat visits on the same day can be counted once. That hash changes every midnight, which means it cannot be used to follow you over time or link you to anything else.

Raw view records are deleted after 90 days. Only daily totals are kept beyond that.

Cookies

No cookies are used for analytics or tracking. The only cookies this site can set are strictly functional ones — a session and a CSRF token — and those only appear if you sign in to the admin area, which is just me.

The contact form

When you send a message I keep your name, email address, and the message itself, so that I can read and reply to it. That's the whole purpose — it isn't added to a mailing list and it isn't shared with anyone.

Comments

If you leave a comment, your name and comment become public once I approve it. Your email address is never published — I collect it only so I can reach you about your comment if I need to.

Every comment is held for review before it appears, which is how I keep spam off the site.

Feedback

The "was this useful?" buttons record your answer and the page you were on, tied to the same daily-rotating hash described above. If you type an optional note, I read it.

Removing your data
